Grades 9–10 | 1 Credit | Thursdays, 2026–2027
Course Description
This course provides a thorough foundation in first-year algebra using the proven incremental, spiral-review method of Saxon Mathematics. Students master concepts through daily practice sets that continually reinforce prior material while introducing new skills. In the classical Christian tradition, mathematics is studied as part of the pursuit of truth, goodness, and beauty. Algebra reveals the logical order and design woven into God’s creation (Colossians 1:17; Romans 1:20), training students to think clearly, reason rigorously, and articulate solutions with precision—skills essential for the rhetoric stage of classical education.
Course Objectives
- Solve equations, inequalities, and systems using algebraic methods.
- Graph linear and quadratic functions and interpret them in real-world contexts.
- Factor polynomials, work with rational expressions, and apply exponential and radical rules.
- Develop logical reasoning and problem-solving habits that reflect the order of God’s universe.
- Articulate mathematical ideas clearly, both verbally and in writing, demonstrating diligence and integrity in their work (as unto the Lord, Colossians 3:23).
Required Materials
- Saxon Algebra 1 Student Textbook (4th Edition)
- Saxon Algebra 1 Solutions Manual (highly recommended for self-checking)
- Saxon Algebra 1 Test Booklet and Answer Key (Homeschool Packet)
- Notebook (for homework and notes), pencils, graph paper, scientific calculator (as introduced in text)
